Alan Titchmarsh's Love Your Garden
April 2013
In mid-April 2013 we were contacted by the production team of Love Your Garden as they needed an 'Inspirational Garden' for their new series and had found our garden on the NGS website. Our garden was inspected and accepted to be paired up with the make-over garden located in Cambridge. We had less than two weeks to prepare our garden for the filming at the end of April. The situation was made worse due to the extremely cold winter - everything in the garden was at least three weeks behind. With our supply of tender plants that we had overwintered in the greenhouses borrowed plants from friends and together with a few new purchases we set about preparing the garden for its TV debut!!!

On the 30th of April at seven in the morning the film crew arrived and made some preliminary assessments. Then, at eight, Alan Titchmarsh arrived. A lot of people have asked us if Alan is as nice in real life as he appears on TV and we can confirm that Alan is a very likeable person. He made us all feel very comfortable and at ease because you feel as though you already know him. The weather on the day was fantastic - a clear blue sky which was perfect for filming. Alan and the crew filmed on Waterhouse Lane and then moved up the drive and into our garden.
The garden is low maintenance, with no lawn, and the Mediterranean and tropical planting style with seating areas gives the garden a holiday feel - which was just what the producers wanted to implement in the make-over garden. Alan was very complimentary about the garden and was especially enthusiastic about Julie's homemade cakes.
Filming took all morning and before Alan left we asked him to sign copies of his autobiography, Knave of Spades, which were used as raffle prizes on our open afternoons and evenings openings. The programme was aired on the 2nd of July 2013 with viewing figures over 3 million, and we found the finished footage really did do the garden justice considering the time of year the filming took place.

A dear friend informed me about ‘The Best Kept Garden Competition 2013’ which was being run by Chelmsford City Council and she encouraged us to enter. We entered the semi-detached house category and submitted four photographs of our garden. We were contacted and chosen as one of the finalists and received a visit to the garden by a panel of judges headed by Ian Le Gros , curator of RHS Hyde Hall. This was followed by an invitation to attend the awards ceremony on 4th July 2013. The awards were presented by the mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Trevor Miller. We were delighted to be the runner up in our category.
